Policiais indianos são suspensos após novo caso de estupro coletivo

     O pai da suposta vítima de 21 anos disse à BBC que ela teria sofrido um estupro coletivo. Seu corpo foi encontrado no sábado.
     Dois homens suspeitos de envolvimento com o crime foram presos e um terceiro teria fugido.
     O novo episódio vem à tona no mesmo dia em que cinco homens compareceram a um tribunal da capital indiana, acusados de sequestro, estupro coletivo e assassinato de uma jovem de 23 anos no mês passado, em um caso que chocou a Índia e despertou uma série de protestos por todo o país.
     A vítima do episódio mais recente era uma empregada de uma fábrica em Noida, um subúrbio de Nova Déli.

     De acordo com a mídia indiana, ela foi dada como desaparecida na sexta-feira, por não ter regressado para casa após o trabalho.
     O pai da menina afirmou que a polícia inicialmente não demonstrou qualquer reação ao ser informada de sua desaparição, sugerindo que ela talvez tivesse fugido com alguém. O episódio gerou protestos em Noida.
Processo acelerado
     No sábado, foram identificados os cinco acusados do crime que causou comoção na Índia - o estupro coletivo e assassinato de uma jovem de 23 anos dentro de um ônibus.
     Os promotores dizem ter amplas provas contra os suspeitos, que poderão ser condenados à pena de morte se considerados culpados.
     Os cinco acusados são Ram Singh, seu irmão Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma e Akshay Thakur.
     Um sexto acusado, um adolescente de 17 anos, será julgado em um tribunal juvenil.
     O processo foi acelerado, para que os acusados pudessem ser julgados semanas após o crime, em vez de meses, como seria o procedimento tradicional.
     No dia 16 de novembro, a vítima, uma estudante, foi estuprada por cerca de uma hora, espancada com barras de ferro e lançada para fora nua do ônibus em movimento, juntamente com um amigo.
     Ela morreu dias depois em um hospital, em consequência de seus ferimentos.
     O incidente segue gerando protestos na Índia. No domingo, ativistas foram novamente às ruas em Nova Déli, reivindicando leis mais duras contra estupro e reformas por parte da polícia.
     Muitos ativistas afirmam que a polícia constantemente deixa de indiciar acusados de crimes sexuais.

Britain's top tabloid scolds Argentina over the Falklands

     The seven-paragraph epistle, penned by the populist Sun tabloid and published in Argentina's main English language newspaper, came in response to fresh demands from President Cristina Fernandez to open talks over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago.
     The two countries fought a 10-week war in 1982 over the remote islands, which are part of Britain's self-governing overseas territories and are known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
     Britain won the war but Argentina started pressing its sovereignty claim anew last year after oil exploration began in waters near the islands.
"British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands dates back to 1765, before the Republic of Argentina even existed," the Sun said in its open letter to Fernandez, published in both Spanish and English in the Buenos Aires Herald.
"In the name of our millions of readers," the Sun said, "HANDS OFF!"
     The Sun, part of media mogul Rupert Murdoch's empire, has a long history of publishing fervently patriotic articles. One of its front pages during the 1982 war it marked the news that British forces had sunk the Argentine warship General Belgrano with the banner headline "GOTCHA."
     As the extent of Argentine losses began to emerge, the Sun changed its headline in later editions. A total of 323 Argentines lost their lives in the attack on the Belgrano.
     While the rhetoric has yet to reach such levels, tensions have flared between London and Buenos Aires against the new backdrop of oil prospects.
     Crude was found to the north of the Falklands in 2010 by Rockhopper Exploration, drawing interest from hedge funds and other investors despite threats from Argentina to disrupt the activity.
     In an open letter from Fernandez to Prime Minister David Cameron published in British newspapers on Thursday, the fiery two-term Peronist leader accused Britain of breaching United Nations resolutions calling for a negotiated solution.
     Cameron rejects negotiations, saying the approximately 3,000 people of the Falkland Islands have chosen to be British.
     In its Friday edition, the Sun used less moderate language for its own British readers than in its open letter to Fernandez, labeling her country a "banana republic."
"Stirring up trouble over the Falklands creates a convenient sideshow for Argentina's tin-pot leaders as they battle problems at home," the Sun said in its editorial, referring to economic woes in Argentina punctuated by slow growth and high inflation.

Damascus blames "terrorists" for petrol station blast

     The bomb killed 11 people and wounded 40 at a station packed with Syrians queuing for fuel, which has become scarce in the 21-month insurgency against Assad, in the second petrol station attack in the capital this week, opposition activists said.
"Terrorists ... blew up an explosive device at Qassioun Petrol Station near Hamish Hospital in Barzeh, Damascus, martyring several civilians," state news agency SANA said.
     The United Nations says more than 60,000 people have been killed in the civil war, the longest, bloodiest conflict born from uprisings across the Arab world in the past two years.
     Dozens of people were incinerated in an air strike as they waited for fuel at another Damascus petrol station on Wednesday, according to opposition sources.
     The semi-official al-Ikhbariya television station aired its own footage from Barzeh, indicating the attack struck a government-held area. Barzeh's residents include members of the Sunni Muslim majority and religious and ethnic minorities.
     The rebels hold a crescent of suburbs on the southern and eastern edges of Damascus, which have come under bombardment by government forces. Rebel forces also seized territory in Syria's north and east during advances in the second half of 2012.
     The war pits rebels, mainly from the Sunni Muslim majority, against a government supported by members of Assad's Shi'ite-derived Alawite sect and some members of other minorities who fear revenge if he falls. Assad's family has ruled for 42 years since his father seized power in a coup.
     Fighting has forced 560,000 Syrians to flee to neighboring countries, according to the U.N.
     Lebanon, a country which has so far tried to distance itself from the conflict next door for fear it will inflame sectarian tensions, approved a plan to start registering 170,000 Syrian refugees and ask international donors for $180 million in aid.
"The Lebanese state will register the refugees...and guarantee aid and protection for the actual refugees in Lebanon," Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour said after a six-hour cabinet session on Thursday night.
     Most Sunni-ruled Arab states, as well as the West and Turkey have called for Assad to step down. He is supported by Russia and Shi'ite Iran.
ARMY WITHDRAWAL?
     A Lebanese citizen who crossed into Syria through a mountainous frontier region said the army appeared to have withdrawn from several border posts and villages in the area.
     Rebels controlled a line of border towns and villages north of the capital Damascus, stretching about 40 km (25 miles) from Yabroud south to Rankus, said the man, who did not want to be named and visited Syria on Wednesday and Thursday.
     Rebels in the area reported that some of Assad's forces have pulled back to defend the main north-south highway linking Syria's main cities of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo, while others were sent to reinforce the northern approach to Damascus.
"The border is controlled by the Free Syrian Army rebels," he said on Friday, adding he had crossed through mountainous terrain, covered in parts by more than a meter of snow.

Juiz determina que Inep dê acesso à prova de redação do Enem a estudante de Passo Fundo

     O juiz federal Frederico Valdez Pereira, do Juizado Especial Federal (JEF) de Carazinho, concedeu liminar a um estudante de Passo Fundo determinando ao Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (Inep) que lhe dê vista da prova de redação do Enem e do espelho de correção em um prazo de 48 horas.
     Em sua fundamentação, o magistrado baseou-se em jurisprudência do Tribunal Regional Federal da 4ª Região (TRF4), citando acórdão da desembargadora Marga Barth Tessler, presidente da corte: “O Enem deve se submeter aos mesmos princípios que regem os concursos públicos e a Administração Pública como um todo, sendo inerente à sua natureza o julgamento objetivo das provas escritas, inclusive sendo obrigatória a oportunização de controle tanto pelos candidatos, como por toda a sociedade”.
     Para Pereira, a restrição de vista da prova de redação estaria desrespeitando os princípios da publicidade e da ampla defesa, visto que impossibilitaria os estudantes de apresentarem recursos para revisão da nota.
     O juiz ressaltou, entretanto, que sua decisão não tem por fim interferir nos critérios de correção do exame, mas apenas garantir o direito dos estudantes de recorrer em relação à avaliação.
     Em caso de descumprimento, o Inep terá que pagar multa diária de R$ 300,00.

UFSM divulga listão de classificados no vestibular

     A Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) divulgou o listão de aprovados no vestibular na tarde desta quinta-feira. A lista dos classificados pode ser conferida aqui ou pelo site da Coperves.
     Os candidatos aprovados devem solicitar ao Departamento de Registro e Controle Acadêmico informações sobre confirmação da vaga, matrícula e documentação pelo telefone (55) 3220 8204 ou e-mail derca.ingresso@ufsm.br.
     Nessa quarta-feira, a UFSM informou, em nota, que não usaria a nota do Enem no vestibular 2012, que não foi disponibilizada pelo Ministério da Educação (MEC) à universidade em prazo previsto pelo edital do concurso.

Suicide car bomber kills 20 Shi'ite pilgrims in Iraq

     The attack underlines sectarian tensions that threaten to further destabilize the country a year after U.S. troops left.
     Police said the bomber drove into a busy station where pilgrims were gathering to return to Baghdad and the northern provinces on their way back from the holy city of Kerbala, where thousands of Shi'ites make an annual pilgrimage for the Arbain rite.
     Mussayab is located some 60 km (40 miles) south of the capital Baghdad.
"I was getting a sandwich when a very strong explosion rocked the place and the blast threw me away. When I regained my senses and stood up, I saw dozens of bodies, said Ali Sabbar, a pilgrim who witnessed the explosion.
"Many cars were set on fire. I just left the place and didn't even participate in the evacuation of the victims".
     Arbain has been a frequent target for militants since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, who banned Shi'ite festivals.
     The latest violence followed nearly two week of protests against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki by thousands of people from the minority Sunni community in the western province of Anbar.
     Although violence is far lower than during the sectarian slaughter of 2006-2007, a total of 4,471 civilians died last year in what one rights group described as a "low-level war" with insurgents.

Homem ataca cachorro nos EUA

     "Um cão mordeu um homem? Não é notícia. Um homem mordeu um cão? É notícia." Esse célebre raciocínio sobre o que tem e o que não tem valor noticioso é muito conhecida dentro e fora das escolas de Jornalismo.
     Em Miami, Flórida, o folclore esteve perto de se tornar realidade: um homem de 20 anos foi preso em Miami (Flórida) depois de ter sido surpreendido pelo dono de uma casa nu em seu quintal, tentando enforcar seu cachorro da raça Rottweiler. Ao ser surpreendido, o intruso ainda tentou morder o dono do cão e os policiais que chegaram ao local para tentar acabar com a confusão.
     Depois de ser flagrado no quintal de uma casa do bairro de Little Haiti tentando enforcar o cachorro da família, o intruso atacou a mordidas o dono do animal, que reagiu atirando no pé do agressor.
     Nem mesmo o pé ferido impediu o intruso de atacar, e quando a polícia chegou, ele também tentou morder os agentes, informou o jornal local El Nuevo Herald.
     O homem foi identificado pela polícia como Jeffrey Delice, 20 anos, com passagem pela polícia por posse de drogas e roubo à mão armada.
     Delice foi levado para o Hospital Jackson Memorial, e será indiciado por resistir à prisão com violência, por atentado ao pudor e por maus tratos a animais.
     O incidente lembrou o dramático caso do chamado "canibal de Miami", ocorrido em 2012, quando um homem nu, em plena luz do dia, em uma ponte próxima às praias da cidade, comeu grande parte do rosto do indigente Ronald Poppo, que atualmente está em fase de recuperação, cego.
